ILDILAW at IAFLL 2026: Two Presentations on Implicit Communication in Legal Discourse

The ILDILAW project was presented at the IAFLL 2026 Conference held at Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier, through two complementary contributions exploring implicit communication in Italian lawyers' pleadings.

The first presentation introduced a new annotation framework for Non-Bona Fide Vagueness, illustrating how strategically vague expressions can strengthen legal arguments while reducing the speaker's commitment to explicit evidence. The proposed methodology combines corpus linguistics, legal pragmatics, and multi-layer manual annotation to investigate vagueness as a persuasive device.

The second presentation, delivered jointly with Davide Garassino, examined the role of Large Language Models in the annotation of implicit linguistic phenomena. By comparing GPT-5 with human annotators on the LISP Corpus, the study discussed both the potential and the current limitations of AI-assisted annotation, highlighting the continued importance of expert human supervision in corpus-based legal linguistics.

Together, the two presentations showcased the latest developments of the ILDILAW project, combining theoretical advances in legal pragmatics with innovative computational methods for the analysis of implicit communication.
