  • XI DILLE Congress — Poster Presentation

A poster presented on 4th June 2026 at the XI Congress of the Società Italiana di Didattica delle Lingue e Linguistica Educativa (DILLE), held at the "L'Orientale" University in Naples. The poster presentation focused on the challenges that international students learning Italian as a second language face when understanding university administrative and bureaucratic texts. In particular, it examined how implicit meanings, such as presuppositions and implicatures, can create barriers to academic inclusion, since successful comprehension depends not only on understanding the explicit content but also on interpreting what is left unsaid. The study highlighted the importance of making institutional communication more pragmatically accessible for linguistically diverse student populations.

A presentation delivered on 11 June 2026 at the IX International Conference Marcatori discorsivi nelle lingue romanze (DISROM IX), held at the University of Oviedo. The contribution examined the use of epistemic markers in Italian legal pleadings, exploring how mitigation, strengthening, and epistemic stance interact in the construction of legal argumentation. Drawing on data from the AttiChiari Corpus, the study showed that epistemic markers often perform multiple pragmatic functions simultaneously, contributing not only to the expression of certainty and uncertainty but also to the negotiation of interpretative authority and enunciative responsibility in legal discourse.

Drawing on the LISP Corpus, the study presented a multi-layer annotation scheme that classifies semantic and syntactic vagueness together with their pragmatic functions, providing a methodology for investigating vagueness as an implicit persuasive device in legal discourse.

    — Oral Presentation (with Davide Garassino)

A presentation delivered at the IAFLL 2026 Conference, held at Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier. The contribution evaluated the potential of Large Language Models as annotators of implicit linguistic devices in Italian lawyers' pleadings. Using data from the LISP Corpus, the study compared GPT-5 and human annotators in the identification and classification of strategic presuppositions, showing that while LLMs achieve substantial agreement in classification tasks, human supervision remains essential for the reliable annotation of implicit meaning in legal discourse.
